Best Car Camping Sleeping Pads

For car camping, thicker is almost always better. Aim for at least 3 inches, and don’t hesitate to go to 4 inches or more if you sleep on your side or want mattress-like comfort. Luxury pads like the Exped MegaMat run especially deep, so a hip or shoulder never reaches the ground.

Both work well when weight isn’t a concern. Self-inflating pads pair foam with air for a plush, stable feel and set up with little effort, though they’re heavier and bulkier. Air pads can hit high warmth at lower weight, but that advantage mostly matters when you’re carrying the pad, not driving it.

A closed-cell foam pad is durable and cheap, but it’s thin and firm, which most people find too spartan for comfort-focused car camping. It makes a fine backup or a layer under a thicker pad on very cold ground. For a good night’s sleep at the car, a plush air or self-inflating pad is worth it.

Not necessarily. For warm summer nights, an R-value around 2 to 3 is plenty, so you can prioritize thickness and comfort over insulation. But a warmer pad costs little in comfort and lets the same pad handle chilly spring and fall trips, so many campers buy one warm pad and use it year-round.
