Best Ultralight Sleeping Bags & Quilts

Best Ultralight Sleeping Bags & Quilts

This ranking leads with low weight and warmth-to-weight, then packed size and fill power. It still counts warmth, so a featherweight bag that sleeps too cold for your trip never takes the top spot by default.

Ultralight is about carrying less, so this list rewards the bags and quilts that deliver the most warmth for the fewest grams. Warmth-to-weight is the headline metric here, and it’s where high fill-power down and quilt construction pull ahead. Dropping the hood, back insulation, and full zip, then using 850 to 950FP down, is how a three-season quilt lands near a pound.

The lightest number on the page doesn’t automatically win. A bag that’s featherweight because it’s barely insulated can leave you cold, so warmth still counts in the score, and the top picks pair low weight with a rating you can actually use. If you value raw grams above all else, re-weight the algorithm and the lightest options climb.

Match warmth to weight, not the other way around. Decide the comfort rating your coldest trip needs, then take the lightest bag or quilt that clears it. Two things to watch when you go this light: a quilt only saves weight if your pad is warm enough to carry your underside, and many of the very lightest bags carry a maker-assigned rating (shown in the Rating column) rather than a lab test, so leave yourself margin.

Common questions

Are quilts lighter than bags?

Usually, for the same warmth. A quilt removes the hood, the crushed insulation beneath you, and the full-length zip. That’s weight that does little once you’re lying on a pad, so a quilt often beats a comparable bag on warmth-to-weight. The trade-off is draftier edges and a reliance on a warm pad.

What is fill power and why does it matter for ultralight?

Fill power measures how much a given weight of down lofts (cu in / oz). Higher fill power (850 to 950FP) traps more warmth per gram, so a higher-FP bag hits the same rating at a lower weight. It’s a down-only spec. Synthetic bags don’t publish it, so they’re ranked on the specs they do publish.

Why isn’t the lightest bag ranked #1?

Because a list ranked purely by grams would crown bags too cold to use. We keep warmth in the score, so the top ultralight picks are the lightest bags that are still warm enough to use. If you want pure weight order, raise the weight slider and lower the rest.

Down or synthetic for ultralight?

Down, almost always. Its warmth-to-weight and packability are unmatched, which is why high-fill-power down dominates ultralight ranking. Synthetic only makes an ultralight case in persistently wet conditions where staying dry is impossible.
