This is the all-rounder rank. Every pack clears a capacity check so it can actually hold a multi-day load, then competes on the numbers that decide whether it earns your shoulders: low weight first, then how much it carries and how tough its fabric is.

The full picture
A backpacking pack is the one piece of gear that carries everything else, so the ranking starts with a capacity gate: a pack has to hold enough for the trip before it can rank at all, which keeps a featherweight summit bag from topping a multi-day list purely because it is light. Clear that bar and the score leans on weight, the number you feel every step, with rated load and fabric denier alongside so a pack that is light but cannot carry or will not last does not win by grams.
The packs at the top pair real volume with a low empty weight, which is why the lightweight framed and removable-frame designs lead: they give you 50 to 65 liters and a working hipbelt for two to three and a half pounds. Heavier traditional haulers still place well when you value load and durability, and you can push them up by raising those factors. Every spec is the manufacturer figure, and an unpublished one shows "n/s" and is never scored as a zero.
The honest tradeoff to know: the lightest packs carry their rated load comfortably but get vague and saggy when you overload them, while a heavier suspension shrugs off a heavy, awkward load. Match the pack to the heaviest load you actually carry, not your lightest. If you want the lightest option that still fits your kit, switch to the ultralight preset; if you routinely haul heavy, the heavy-loads preset re-sorts toward suspension and toughness.
Common questions
What size backpack do I need for backpacking?
For most multi-day trips a 50 to 65 liter pack is the sweet spot: big enough for a three-season sleep system, food, and layers without tempting you to overpack. Weekenders can drop to 40 to 50 liters, and winter or long resupply trips push toward 65 to 75. This page gates on capacity so every pack shown holds a real load, then ranks the rest on weight and carry.
How much should a backpacking backpack weigh?
Lightweight framed packs land around two to three and a half pounds and carry a normal three-season load well. Traditional packs run four to six pounds for a burlier suspension and more durability. Frameless ultralight packs dip near or under a pound but need a light base weight to be comfortable. The ranking leads with weight so you can see the tradeoff directly.
Are ultralight or traditional packs better for backpacking?
It depends on your load. A lightweight or ultralight pack is the better choice once your base weight is moderate, since you carry less pack for the same job. A traditional internal-frame pack earns its weight when loads are heavy, bulky, or you want a plush hipbelt. Re-weight the algorithm toward load and durability to see the traditional packs rise.
How are these backpacks ranked?
GearScore blends published specs into one 0 to 100 number: a capacity sufficiency check, then weight, rated load, fabric denier, and price. It uses no opinion or sponsorship, shows unpublished specs as "n/s" without scoring them as zero, and lets you re-weight any factor to match your trip.
