The full picture
Synthetic insulation makes its case on value and wet-weather reliability. It costs a fraction of premium down, keeps much of its warmth when damp, and dries faster. That’s why this list leads on price-per-warmth and weight rather than the warmth-to-weight where down would always win.
There’s a clear trade-off. Synthetic is heavier and bulkier than down for the same warmth, and it loses loft faster over years of compression. For car camping, wet climates, canoe and packraft trips, or a first backpacking bag, those trade-offs are often worth the money saved and the peace of mind when conditions turn wet.
Synthetic technology varies a lot between makers, but fill type isn’t one of the things we score. We treat it as a preference filter instead. What we score is the outcome: warmth (standardized and gated), weight, packed size, and value. If weight is your priority and you can keep gear dry, compare this list against the Down ranking before you decide.
Common questions
Why choose synthetic over down?
A few reasons. Synthetic costs much less than down, it keeps you warmer when wet, and it dries faster. For wet climates, paddling trips, tight budgets, or a bag that will see hard, damp use, it’s the practical choice. You pay for it in extra weight and bulk.
How much heavier is synthetic than down?
Enough to notice. For the same warmth, a synthetic bag typically weighs and packs noticeably more than a down bag, because synthetic fibers loft less per gram. The weight and packed-volume columns show the gap for each bag, so you can judge whether it matters for your trips.
Does synthetic insulation wear out?
It loses loft faster than down over years of stuffing and compression, so its usable warmth declines sooner. Storing it uncompressed (loose in a large sack) slows this down. Down generally holds its loft longer, which is part of its long-run value.
Is synthetic warm enough for winter?
It can be. Synthetic winter bags exist and are reliable in wet cold, but they’re heavy and bulky at cold ratings, so most cold-weather backpackers pick down. For three-season and wet conditions, synthetic is more than warm enough.
