This list is filtered to synthetic-fill bags, the reliable choice when staying dry is not guaranteed. Synthetic insulation keeps most of its warmth when damp and dries quickly, unlike down, so this ranking leads on value and warmth-to-weight among the bags least likely to leave you cold and wet.

The full picture
The case for synthetic is simple physics. Down lofts by trapping air in clusters, and when those clusters get wet they collapse and stop insulating. Synthetic insulation is made of water-resistant fibers that hold their structure when damp, so a soaked synthetic bag still keeps you meaningfully warm and dries far faster. In a leaky tent, a humid coastal night, or a canoe trip where a dunk is possible, that reliability is worth more than a few ounces.
Synthetic bags also cost less, which is why this ranking leads on value (price per unit of warmth) alongside warmth-to-weight. You give up some packed size and pay a weight penalty for the same warmth compared with down, but for wet-climate trips and hard use that is often the right trade. The bags at the top here deliver dependable warmth for the money without asking you to baby them.
If you love down but camp wet, there is a middle path this list does not filter for: hydrophobic-treated down, which resists moisture longer than untreated down. It is not a substitute for synthetic in a real soaking, and makers publish the treatment inconsistently, so we do not rank on it. For guaranteed wet-weather performance from a published, verifiable spec, synthetic fill is the honest filter, and it is what this page shows.
Common questions
Why is synthetic better for wet weather?
Synthetic insulation is made of water-resistant fibers that keep most of their loft, and therefore their warmth, when damp, and it dries quickly. Down collapses when wet and stops insulating until it fully dries. For rain, humidity, condensation, or any trip where staying dry is not guaranteed, synthetic is the more reliable fill, which is why this list filters to it.
Is a wet down bag useless?
Not useless, but badly compromised: wet down loses most of its loft and warmth until it dries, which can take a long time in the field. Hydrophobic-treated down resists moisture longer and helps in damp conditions, but it is not a match for synthetic in a real soaking. If wet is likely, synthetic removes the risk.
Do synthetic bags weigh more?
Yes. For the same warmth, a synthetic bag is heavier and packs larger than a down bag, because down has better warmth-to-weight. The trade you get is wet-weather reliability, faster drying, easier care, and a lower price. This ranking weighs value and warmth-to-weight together so you see which synthetics carry that trade best.
How are wet-weather bags ranked?
The list filters to synthetic-fill bags (a published attribute), then scores them on value, warmth-to-weight, and a warmth threshold you set, all from published specs. Lab-tested ratings are weighted over optimistic maker numbers, unpublished specs show "n/s" rather than a guess, and you can re-weight the factors in the algorithm panel.
