Air pads are for people who want maximum warmth and comfort in the smallest package, and will pay for it. Closed-cell foam pads are for people who want a pad that never punctures, deflates, or needs a valve. Air pads make up the large majority of our catalog against a small handful of foam, and that ratio tells the market's story. Air is where the range and the innovation live. Foam is a small, cheap, near-indestructible corner you buy into on purpose.

Warmth is the widest gap. Air pads run much warmer on average and climb to the warmest pad in the whole catalog, the NEMO Tensor Extreme Conditions, which sits in deep four-season territory. The foam pads deliver only modest warmth and top out at the RidgeRest SOLite, three-season-mild at best. Comfort is just as lopsided. Air pads are much thicker, while foam is a thin, firm layer. Foam does win on cost, coming in far cheaper than air, and it holds its own on weight. Choosing between them mostly comes down to how you camp. If you want one pad for real cold, true comfort, and a small pack, buy air and treat the puncture risk as a known cost (carry the patch kit). If your priority is a pad that shrugs off sharp ground and sets up with a simple unroll, foam is honest value. Plenty of experienced backpackers refuse to pick and carry both. A foam pad under an air pad stacks the R-values, cushions against punctures, and doubles as a camp seat. It's about as bombproof as a sleep system gets, at the cost of bulk on your pack.

Common questions

Which is warmer, air or foam?

Air pads win it comfortably. They run much warmer on average and reach the highest R-values in the catalog, while the foam pads offer only modest warmth and max out well short of them. For anything below mild three-season conditions, an insulated air pad is the warmer choice.

Can I use a foam pad in winter?

Not on its own. Closed-cell foam offers only modest warmth, three-season-mild territory at best, not cold-weather insulation. In winter, foam earns its place layered underneath a warm air pad, where its R-value adds to the air pad's and it guards against punctures on frozen or rocky ground.

Are foam pads worth it?

For the right buyer, yes. They're the cheapest option by a wide margin, they can't puncture or deflate, and they set up instantly with no valve. What you trade away is warmth, plushness (foam is a thin, firm layer), and packability, since foam is bulky and usually straps to the outside of your pack.

Should I put a foam pad under my air pad?

It's a popular move for good reason. Stacking foam beneath an air pad adds their R-values together for more warmth, protects the inflatable from ground punctures, and gives you a backup if the air pad fails overnight. The downside is added weight and bulk, so it's most worth it in cold conditions or on rough terrain.
