This list is filtered to frameless packs: no framesheet, no stays, the lightest way to carry. Within them the usual weight, capacity, and price math decides the order, and the score leans hard on weight because that is the whole point.

The full picture
A frameless pack drops the framesheet and stays entirely, which is the single biggest weight saving in a backpack. What carries the load instead is your packing: a firm sleeping pad or a tight, well-organized load against your back becomes the structure. Done right, a frameless pack in the 30 to 55 liter range carries a light kit at a weight a framed pack cannot touch, which is why they are the choice of committed ultralighters and fastpackers.
The catch is that a frameless pack only works with a light, tidy base weight. Without a frame to transfer weight to your hips, most of the load rides on your shoulders, so comfort falls off quickly once you pass roughly twenty to thirty pounds, which is exactly why the rated loads here are lower. Pack it loose or heavy and it sags and digs; pack it firm and light and it disappears on your back. The ranking rewards low weight, but the fit between the pack and your load is on you.
A few practical notes. Many frameless packs are designed to use your sleeping pad as a virtual frame, so a rigid or folded foam pad does double duty. A roll-top lets you cinch a partly full pack tight, which matters more without a frame to hold shape. And because these are minimalist packs, they lean on your technique. If you are not sure your base weight is low enough, a minimal-frame ultralight pack on the ultralight preset gives you a little insurance for a few more ounces.
Common questions
What is a frameless backpack?
A frameless backpack has no internal frame or stays. The load is supported by how you pack it, often using a firm sleeping pad against your back as a virtual frame. Dropping the frame makes it the lightest kind of pack, at the cost of comfort under heavier loads, so frameless packs suit light, tidy base weights.
How much weight can a frameless backpack carry?
Comfortably, roughly twenty to thirty pounds for most people, which is why frameless packs have lower rated loads. Without a frame, the weight rides mostly on your shoulders rather than transferring to your hips, so comfort drops off as the load grows. They shine once your base weight is low enough that your total stays under that ceiling.
Are frameless backpacks comfortable?
With a light, well-packed load, yes, and they can feel wonderfully unencumbered. The keys are keeping your total weight modest and packing firmly, often with your sleeping pad forming the back support. Overload or loosely pack a frameless pack and it sags and digs. The comfort is real but conditional on technique and a light kit.
How are frameless backpacks ranked?
The list filters to frameless packs, then scores them on the same published specs as the rest of the site: a capacity check, then weight, rated load, and price, with weight leading. Unpublished specs show "n/s" and are never scored as zero, and you can re-weight any factor to match how you pack.
