This is the all-rounder rank. Every lamp clears a brightness check so it can actually light a trail and a camp task, then competes on the numbers that decide whether it earns a spot in your pack: low weight first, then how far it throws.

The full picture
A backpacking headlamp lives in your pack for days, so the ranking starts with a brightness gate at a sensible target, then leans on weight, the number you carry every mile. Bright enough to find the trail, pitch a tent, and cook, without hauling a spotlight you never turn to full. Clear the gate and low weight leads, with beam distance alongside so a lamp that is light but cannot throw does not win on grams alone.
The lamps at the top pair a real output with a low weight, which is why the compact rechargeables lead: 300 to 700 usable lumens in something that weighs 45 to 90 grams with its battery. Every spec is the manufacturer figure, and an unpublished one shows "n/s" and is never scored as a zero. Runtime, battery type, and water rating are shown for context so you can weigh a rechargeable against a lamp that takes AAA cells you can swap on a long trip.
The honest tradeoff to know: a rechargeable lamp is lighter and cheaper to run, but on a multi-day trip with no outlet you either carry a battery pack or want a lamp that also takes disposable AAA cells. Match the lamp to your resupply, not just its weight. If you want the outright lightest, switch to the ultralight preset; if you route-find at night or run the trail, the running preset leans toward throw.
Common questions
How many lumens do I need for a backpacking headlamp?
For most backpacking, 300 to 500 lumens is plenty: enough to find the trail, set up camp, and cook, while sipping battery on lower settings the rest of the time. You rarely need max output for long, so this page treats brightness as good-enough and then ranks on weight and throw. If you route-find off-trail at night, look higher, toward 700 lumens and a longer beam.
How much should a backpacking headlamp weigh?
Compact rechargeable and AAA headlamps land around 45 to 90 grams with batteries, which is light enough to forget on your head. Higher-output lamps with bigger cells run heavier. The ranking leads with weight so you can see the tradeoff between output and grams directly.
Rechargeable or AAA for backpacking?
Rechargeable lamps are lighter, cheaper to run, and brighter for their size, and they are the better default near power. On long trips without an outlet, AAA or hybrid lamps let you carry spare cells instead of a battery pack. Several lamps here take both. Use the battery filter to see only the type you want.
How are these headlamps ranked?
GearScore blends published specs into one 0 to 100 number: a brightness sufficiency check, then weight, beam distance, and price. It uses no opinion or sponsorship, shows unpublished specs as "n/s" without scoring them as zero, and lets you re-weight any factor to match how you camp.
